Roman numerals are often used in accounting to help abbreviate and designate numbers. For example, the Roman numeral MM is frequently used to designate that the units used in presenting information financial and non-financial in millions.
The Roman numeral M is used to indicate units in thousands. Frequently, in finance and accounting, an analyst will use k to denote thousands and a capitalized M to denote millions. In Roman numerals, a million is M with a horizontal bar over the letter. A horizontal bar over any Roman numeral multiplies its value by 1, C becomes ,, X becomes 10, and M with a bar becomes 1, times 1,, or 1 million.
Any similarity with roman numerals ends there, however, because MM in roman numerals means two thousand, not a thousand thousands, or one million, as in financial contexts the year in roman numerals is MMXX. I've been revising presentations for US financial-services CFOs and other senior managers for twenty years, and they have all used M for million, not thousand; I've never seen MM.
WS2: I do have the vague sense that K and M aren't really part of the same set of abbreviations. For the purposes of clarity, you probably shouldn't mix SI prefixes with "business world accounting" symbols; Because there is overlap between these groups, there is a great possibility that confusion may result.
I suggest you pick one convention of expression, and declare it near the beginning of any document. Incidentally, this doesn't really seem like an ELU question Show 7 more comments. MM is the abbreviation which used for presenting in millions. But as M and MM create confusion, so the people started using alternatives. Now to present in thousands, the word K is used, and for presentation in Million, the word M is used, and for presentation, in Billions, abbreviation Bn is used.
