Please take note of any safety signs, directional signage and site cordons which are there for your own safety. Sand is dredged from a licensed area of seabed, for example, to the South East of the Isle of Wight.

It is brought by dredger close to the section of beach where it will be deposited. The sand is then pumped through a long pipe on to the beach. The sand is mixed with water to assist it being pumped. As the mixture exits the pipe the water flows back in to the sea leaving the new sand behind. The beach is then levelled using bulldozers. This means it can get quite crowded during the summer holidays especially at the weekends or when guaranteed sunshine is forecast.

The beaches close to the pier tend to be more popular with the younger crowd and with the large student population studying in the town. However just a short walk in either direction will soon bring you to a quieter stretch of sand. One runs east to Boscombe Pier and another runs west as far as Branksome Chine Beach stopping at all the intermediate beaches on the way.
